Here is the thing almost nobody tells engineering students until it is too late to act on: the aerospace internship cycle runs about a year ahead of every other industry, and it is starting right now, this month, while most of your classmates are still on holiday and not thinking about it at all.
That is not a sales line. It is arithmetic. Boeing's United States fall recruiting window runs from August to October, which means it is open as you read this. NASA's spring 2027 application deadline is 14 September 2026, which is forty days away. The launch companies typically start posting in late August. And because nearly all of these review applications on a rolling basis rather than after a closing date, the person who applies in week one is read by a human and the person who applies in week six frequently is not.

Why this industry is a year ahead of everyone else
Three things push the aerospace calendar forward, and understanding them tells you why the pattern will not change to suit you.
The first is that programmes plan headcount far in advance. A launch vehicle programme knows in September what it needs in June, and the requisition for a summer intern is approved on that cycle rather than on an academic one.
The second is export control. A large share of these roles are restricted to US persons, which means every employer in the sector is fishing in the same limited pool. When you are competing for the same eligible students as four other companies, posting first is a genuine advantage, and everyone knows it. The result is a race that has crept steadily earlier.
The third is rolling review, which is the one that actually costs students offers. A requisition that collects several hundred applications in a fortnight gets worked from the top. A brilliant application submitted in November sits underneath a stack of adequate ones submitted in September, and there is no mechanism by which it moves up.
What waiting actually costs you
Not everything, which is worth saying plainly. There is something open in every month of the cycle. But the field narrows sharply, and the narrowing is not gradual.

Start in August and you are choosing from the whole industry. Start in November and the primes and the launch companies have largely closed, leaving suppliers, federally funded research centres and smaller space firms, which are genuinely good options but a much smaller set. Start in March and you are working the reposting wave, where accepted offers fell through and seats get quietly relisted with short deadlines.
The students who end up with nothing are almost never the ones who lacked the qualifications. They are the ones who started looking in January because that is when internships happen in every other industry, and by then the thing they wanted had been filled since October.
The two week version
You do not need a four month plan. You need to be ready before the postings land, and that is a fortnight of work at most.
This week. Settle whether you are a US person under export control rules, because that single fact determines which half of the industry is available and there is no point discovering it in October. Then finish your resume. Not polish it, finish it, one page, single column, projects taking the largest share.
Next week. Build a list of thirty employers with the careers page URL for each, and go beyond the four names everyone knows, because the suppliers and satellite firms have far better odds and no recruiting machine. Then write two paragraphs describing your best technical accomplishments, with what the problem was, what you did and what the measurable result was. SpaceX's application requires exactly this as a free text field, several others ask something similar, and writing it at midnight with a form open is how good candidates produce mediocre answers.
Then check weekly. First Monday of every month from now through February, work the list. Job alerts miss most of these postings and Handshake misses more.
If you are reading this late
Some of you are finding this in December, or in March, or in your final year having never done an internship at all. The honest message is not that you have missed your chance, because that is both untrue and unhelpful.
NASA's summer deadline is in late February, months after the corporate windows close. Suppliers and smaller companies post throughout the winter. The spring reposting wave is real and almost nobody works it. Spring and autumn internships attract a fraction of the applicants that summer does, and NASA's autumn and spring sessions run fifteen weeks against ten for summer, so you get more time on the work.
And an internship is not the only route in. Undergraduate research, a competition team, a well documented personal project or a summer at a machine shop making flight components all build the thing employers are actually looking for, which is evidence that you can do the work.
Start where you are. The point of this article is not that you should feel behind, it is that the calendar is knowable and most people never learn it until they have already lost a cycle to it.

Competition teams, undergraduate research, coursework projects and personal builds all count as evidence. SpaceX's own posting counts laboratory and personal or team project experience toward its applied engineering requirement.
How many applications should I submit?
Twenty five to forty across a range of employer sizes, spread from August through February rather than crammed into one weekend.
