SpaceX vs Blue Origin vs Relativity Space Internships (2026)

These three companies get compared constantly and almost always on vibes. One is the famous one, one belongs to the Amazon founder, one prints rockets. That framing tells you nothing useful when you are deciding where to spend a summer and where to spend your limited application energy.

So this compares them on what the employers actually publish: stated pay, housing support, duration, sites and eligibility. Where a number comes from a job posting I say so. Where something is unknowable, such as acceptance rates, I say that too rather than repeating an estimate that started life as a guess on Reddit.

Pay: the famous one pays least

This is the finding that surprises people, and it is stated plainly in the postings rather than inferred.

SpaceX lists $28.00 an hour for engineering interns at freshman or sophomore level and $30.00 an hour for juniors and seniors, with the rate set by academic level.

Blue Origin's summer 2026 engineering intern posting for undergraduates listed $32.00 an hour for California, Colorado and Washington applicants, and its spring 2026 guidance, navigation and controls intern posting listed the same $32.00 figure. A non engineering role, the education programs and outreach intern in Seattle, listed $28.00.

Relativity Space posted its 2026 summer internship at a range of $31 to $37, and a propulsion manufacturing engineer intern posting carried a hiring range of $32 to $40.

So on stated rates the order runs Relativity, then Blue Origin, then SpaceX. That ordering holds up in self reported offer data too, where Blue Origin roles at masters level have been reported around $38 an hour and Relativity around $38, against SpaceX mechanical offers clustering near $30.

Before you conclude anything from that, read the next section, because the hourly rate is not what determines how much money you have in September.

Housing changes the arithmetic more than pay does

All three sit in expensive places, and how each handles housing differs meaningfully.

Blue Origin states housing and relocation support directly in its postings, with the caveat that interns are responsible for daily transportation to and from work sites. Self reported offers describe corporate housing arranged by the company in several cases, and in others a monthly housing allowance of around $1,000 plus a transportation allowance.

Relativity provides a lump sum stipend toward living expenses along with a housing guide covering options near its offices. A guide is not money, so read the stipend figure carefully when an offer arrives.

SpaceX says interns may be eligible for a stipend to subsidise relocation costs. Self reported offers have included figures around $3,000 toward housing and $500 toward transportation, though this is candidate reported rather than published.

The practical consequence: a Blue Origin offer at $32 an hour with corporate housing in Kent can easily leave you with more money than a higher hourly rate somewhere you are paying South Bay or Long Beach rent out of pocket. Work out what you keep, not what you earn, and ask specifically whether housing support is a stipend, a reimbursement or company arranged accommodation, because recruiters use those words loosely and they are three quite different things.

Eligibility is identical, so it cannot be a tiebreaker

All three restrict internships to US persons under export control rules, and all three use essentially the same definition.

SpaceX requires applicants to be a US citizen or national, a lawful permanent resident, a refugee under 8 USC 1157 or an asylee under 8 USC 1158. Blue Origin requires applicants to be a US citizen or national, a US permanent resident meaning a current green card holder, or someone lawfully admitted as a refugee or granted asylum. Relativity applies equivalent US person requirements.

Two things follow. If you are an international student on an F-1 visa, none of the three is available, and you should redirect your energy toward commercial aviation, advanced air mobility, university research or employers outside the United States rather than spending a season on applications that cannot succeed. And if you are a green card holder, a refugee or an asylee, all three are open to you, which is worth stating because many students in that position assume otherwise.

Blue Origin additionally notes a standard background check for all positions, plus a Defense Biometric Identification System check for roles that require access to a military installation.

Sites, and what that means for your summer

SpaceX offers the widest geographic choice, with internships across Hawthorne and Irvine in California, Vandenberg in California, Starbase, Bastrop and McGregor in Texas, Cape Canaveral in Florida, and Redmond in Washington. Your own transportation is required at Bastrop, Cape Canaveral, McGregor and Vandenberg.

Blue Origin's intern postings run out of Kent and Seattle in Washington, with additional sites in Florida, Alabama, Texas and Colorado.

Relativity runs all internships fully onsite at one of three locations: Long Beach in California, Stennis in Mississippi, or Cape Canaveral in Florida.

The site matters more than students expect. A summer at a test facility in Stennis or McGregor is a different experience from a summer in a design office, both in the work and in what there is to do at the weekend. If you want to be near hardware being fired, the remote sites are where that happens.

The work itself

SpaceX splits its internships across five programs and asks you to state a preference on the application. Dragon covers the human rated spacecraft and is the only one listing life support systems. Falcon covers the reusable launch vehicles and includes recovery engineering and launch site operations. Starlink is the highest volume manufacturing operation in the company. Starshield supports national security work. Starship lists the widest range of disciplines, including civil engineering, reflecting the ground infrastructure being built.

Blue Origin's work spans the BE-4 engine, New Glenn and the Blue Moon lander, with intern postings across engineering disciplines including avionics, GNC and electrical systems. Its GNC posting asked for hands-on project experience and experience with avionics software and C or C++, which is a reasonable guide to what the technical bar looks like.

Relativity gives the most concrete picture of any of the three, because it published examples of past intern projects: leading the design and pressure test planning for its 3D printed domes, designing a brushless DC servo motor, and developing and executing a test plan for flight hardware such as a quick disconnect mechanism. Those are real deliverables with an owner, and the fact that Relativity chose to advertise them says something about how it uses interns.

Culture, read from the postings rather than from Glassdoor

You can learn a surprising amount about a company from how it writes a job advert.

Relativity asks candidates to thrive in ambiguity, identify problems and quickly resolve them, and provide definition to the previously undefined. That is a company telling you that structure will not be provided and that this is a feature rather than an oversight.

Blue Origin includes an explicit culture statement encouraging people to apply even if their experience does not align with every desired qualification, noting that some people are less likely to apply unless they meet every single one. Whatever else that signals, it is a deliberate effort to widen the funnel, and it sits alongside the most structured intern programme of the three.

SpaceX asks for demonstrated commitment to academic success and motivation to apply knowledge outside the classroom, and its application form includes a structured checklist of student groups covering rocket clubs, robotics, satellite groups and hyperloop teams. The message there is fairly unambiguous about what kind of student it wants.

So which one

A framework for deciding between offers, not for deciding where to apply. Apply to all three.

The honest answer is that this is the wrong question for most people, because you are unlikely to be choosing. All three are competitive, none publishes an acceptance rate, and the sensible strategy is to apply to all three plus a dozen employers nobody has heard of. The comparison matters when offers are in hand.

When that happens: pick SpaceX if you want scale and hardware flying constantly, and you can absorb the lowest stated rate. Pick Blue Origin if housing support matters to your finances, if you want a more structured programme, or if your degree structure suits a spring or autumn term. Pick Relativity if you want the most ownership over a discrete project, the highest posted pay range, and you find large scale additive manufacturing genuinely interesting rather than just novel.

Should I apply to all three?

Yes. They open on similar timelines in late summer and autumn, they review on a rolling basis, and applying to one does not affect the others.
